Hydie Schloesser
Storage Lab Support – IBM

I am a woman driven by curiosity and discovery.

My journey into STEM wasn’t a straight path—it was one of exploration and self-discovery. When I first entered the University of Arizona, I was undecided about my future. That changed the day I took my first Management Information Systems (MIS) class, MIS 111 – Intro to Computing. It was a revelation. I remember marveling, “This is a field? I can build a career in this?” from that day, I was hooked. In my junior year, I landed an internship with IBM that grew into a fulfilling career spanning over 20 years. That opportunity not only shaped the trajectory of my life but also brought me full circle—to the very campus where my journey first took root.

I am inspired by the progress I’ve witnessed in the representation of women in STEM. When I look around today, I see more women thriving in technical roles, building innovative solutions and leading with confidence. It gives me hope for the future. While there’s still work to be done, every step forward reminds me how far we’ve come—and how much further we can go.

Aliana Campas
Communication Specialist – University of Arizona Center for Innovation

I am a woman of integrity.

Family has always been central to who I am with my most significant influences being the strong women who raised me: my aunts, grandmothers and mother. Their guidance taught me essential lessons and values that have propelled me further in my education and career.

My mom and grandma are fully responsible for the woman I am today. They are outstanding role models who have always been my pillars of strength, wisdom, and unwavering support and I have them to thank for my work ethic and determination. Being a woman of STEM and a first-generation college graduate has brought along obstacles, but my confidence in myself and my skill set has gotten me to where I am today. I will forever be grateful for the women around me who have shown me how to carry myself with grace and to lead with kindness for each decision I make.

Vikki Cleveland
Sr. Business Coordinator – Citi
I am a woman of resilience and perseverance.

I grew up as an Army brat, born in New Jersey but raised all over the world, constantly adapting to new places, cultures, and experiences. Eventually, I found my roots and called Arizona home. Through all the moves and changes, the one constant in my life was my father. He shaped me into the woman I am today by teaching invaluable lessons: to chase my goals fearlessly, to stand on my own two feet, and to always prioritize my education. His guidance and unwavering support inspired me to achieve what I once thought was impossible.

I made it, Dad—I’ve become the woman you always believed in.

Women are so much more than what the world often sees. We are colleagues, bosses, friends, sisters, aunts, daughters, mothers, grandmothers, wives, and above all else, warriors. We wear many hats and face countless challenges, yet we rise, adapt, and conquer with strength and grace. It is this determined spirit that binds us and defines who we are, proving that there is no limit to what we can achieve.

Julie Miller

From humble, small town beginnings to international reach; from biology to physics; from science and research to high tech manufacturing; from engineering to marketing; from technician to manager; from building a small business from the ground up to merging that business with a large corporation; from employee to business owner; from solo adventurer to partner and parent; from goal getter to supporting others in leveling up; every aspect of my life has undergone dramatic transformations that have enabled me to participate in experiences beyond my wildest imagination and adapt to ever changing situations and environments.

My career path in optics and photonics mirrors the very nature of transformation that defines the field—constantly evolving, adapting, and illuminating new possibilities. Just as light can be shaped, redirected, and amplified, my journey has been one of continuous growth, shifting from one role to another, and expanding my expertise to contribute to groundbreaking advancements.
My enthusiasm for fostering change goes beyond my own journey—it encompasses building communities, mentoring future generations in STEM, and empowering my four incredible daughters. I am eager to embrace and contribute to the many transformations that lie ahead.

I am a woman of Hope.

6 years ago, I never thought that I would be where I am today. I’m blessed to be apart of a great organization who mentors and develops their employees that not only can we utilize the knowledge in our career but also in our personal lives. A traumatic experience happened 6 years ago when my 2 babies were kidnapped, not knowing what to do next, I drew upon the valuable lessons that I learned in meetings and trainings and integrated them with my search for my loved ones. My achievements are a result of me never giving up hope, having faith and continuing to move forward despite all that was going on around me. I wish to inspire those that are going through challenges to remain hopeful. Through 6 years of hope and perseverance during what could have been the darkest time of my life, I was promoted twice, reunited with my babies and continue to plan for our future.

Brenda Figueroa
Lab Technician – IBM
I am a woman of resilience – I rise above my fears and embrace every step toward my true potential.

Growing up I was intrigued by technology. After graduating from Pueblo High School, I pursued a computer science degree at the University of Arizona. However, as a sophomore, I became a mother, and my priorities shifted. I put my education on hold to focus on raising my son.

Seven years later, I returned to school but doubted whether I could pursue the technical career path I had once envisioned, and opted for a degree that would lead to a career in human resources. After graduating, I gained diverse experience in roles such as call center agent, administrative assistant, and mortgage loan officer/assistant. The economic downturn resulted in my layoff, providing a pivotal moment to rethink my career. It was an opportunity to finally pursue my long-held dream of working in technology.

Today, I’m proud to say I recently graduated the Systems Support Apprenticeship program offered by IBM—an opportunity I once only imagined. That achievement has allowed me to secure a full-time role as an IBM Lab Technician. Working at UA Tech Park is especially meaningful to me, as I’ve always been passionate about all things University of Arizona—my alma mater.

While part of me wishes I’d made this leap sooner, I’m deeply grateful for the journey that brought me here. Every detour, challenge, and leap of faith shaped who I am and brought me closer to my true self. I’ve learned to overcome fear, embrace change, and trust the process. This new professional chapter of my life is just beginning, and I’m excited to see where the journey will take me.

Christa Nelson
Mortgage Personal Processor – Citi
I am a woman of cadence.

I have always been captivated by the simple elegance of a bicycle. It isn’t just a mode of transportation; it was a metaphor for life itself—a reminder that balance, momentum and direction are keys to success. As a mortgage processor for Citi, I spend my workdays ensuring the dreams of homeownership come to life for countless families. But behind my desk and headset, there is a deeper journey—a personal ride fueled by vision and purpose.

I embrace her role as a champion for other women. She often organized cycling meetups in her community, inviting women of all ages to join her on rides. These weren’t just outings; they were gatherings of empowerment, where stories of struggle and triumph were shared, and where the group learned that together, they could conquer any climb.

As Christa pedaled through life, she became a symbol of what it means to harness the power of the bicycle: to balance vision and effort, to embrace freedom and self-reliance, and to inspire others to find their own path. Whether she was helping a family secure their first home or mentoring a colleague to reach new heights, Christa lived by the principle that life is a journey best traveled with purpose.

Sonia Vonhout
Mentor in Resident – University of Arizona Center for Innovation
I am a woman of grit, inspired by my father, a scientist, and my mother, a stay-at-home mom. They instilled resilience and empowered me to pursue my dreams with the best education possible.

With their encouragement, I entered computer science and engineering when few women did. I broke barriers by developing transformative optimization software in the mining and telecommunications industries. Despite discrimination and setbacks, I have co-founded manufacturing and medical device businesses, transitioned to consulting, and continue helping companies thrive.

Beyond my career, I embrace challenges by working out, hiking, and mentoring women and underrepresented groups. I volunteer with organizations like the Arizona Technology Council, the Southern Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and non-profit health organizations. My goal is to empower women to overcome, follow their dreams, and enjoy the journey. By leading through action, I build community and inspire others to reach their fullest potential.

Roxanne Henry
Analyst – Citi
I am a women of intuition

As a young girl, I envisioned myself as a successful business woman and it is a dream come true to have a career in STEM. I was born and raised in Tucson because my parents relocated from Minnesota for my dad’s position at IBM, right here on this campus. So, being recognized as a Woman in the UA Tech Park is a truly special full-circle moment.

The most important influences in my life have been the women: my mother and grandmothers. My mom is a hard worker, striving to be the best example for her children. She worked as a florist before returning to school twice to change careers and advance in the medical field. My paternal grandmother was a renowned Navajo rug weaver and silversmith who traveled the country showcasing her art. My maternal grandmother worked tirelessly as a rural route mail carrier, braving long days in all kinds of weather, including snow and rain.

As the first woman in my immediate family to pursue a STEM career, I strive to carry forward the creativity, work ethic, and determination exemplified by my family, while also enriching my own intelligence and skills. I’ve faced doubts along the way, but I’ve overcome them by trusting my instincts and making bold decisions to pivot or take leaps forward. These choices have led to incredible opportunities, strong mentors, and unforgettable experiences that have shaped both my professional path and the person I am today.

Gladize Fuentes
Logistics Supervisor – Eurofins Cell TX
I am a woman of courage.

Proudly from the Philippines, and I’ve faced numerous challenges rebuilding my life in the US. There were moments when I thought about giving up, but I refused to let that happen. When battling with myself, I often rely on weighing the pros and cons of my actions. While some say you should choose your battles, I didn’t have that luxury.

I aspired to be an accountant, but when finances were tight, I wasn’t afraid to pursue other paths. Some people believe it’s too late if you haven’t finished on time, but I firmly believe that it’s not about timing—it’s about how far you’re willing to go to achieve your dreams. And look at me now—I know I still have a way to go, but I can feel that I’m getting closer. While I’m uncertain about what tomorrow holds, I trust myself and know that I can make it happen.

I worked hard to accelerate my career. I began as a laboratory technician, then moved into facilities and purchasing coordinator and opened a new position in the same area. From there, I received a promotion to logistics supervisor. Within just two years, I held four positions and earned two promotions, growing with the company as they excelled.

This year, I am graduating with a BS Healthcare Administration, balancing the responsibilities of being a mom to two daughters while excelling as a working professional. It hasn’t been easy, but I continue to push forward, knowing that every step brings me closer to my dreams.

Lesley Chermside
Lead Systems Engineer – Raytheon
I am a woman of intention.

I have a natural aptitude for STEM subjects and chose to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering. I was lucky to work with strong women early in my career and I learned by example that the women who were technical leaders were active participants in their careers. I actively seek out opportunities to learn and grow in both my professional and personal lives. Women are natural team builders and collaborators, and I intentionally incorporate those traits with my technical expertise to help my projects succeed. I understand the big picture of projects I work on and quickly assimilate new information. I am frequently the only woman in the room, and I am conscious of the impact I have in paving the way for more women to be technical leaders within my company and in the defense industry.

Carla Ruhl
Product Application Engineer – IBM
I am a woman who is devoted.

In both my personal and professional life, I am deeply passionate about helping others. My faith in God, my cherished husband, and my family are the foundation of my life. Mathematics has always been a source of joy for me—whether in quilting, solving logic puzzles, or tackling technical challenges.

Tucson is my home, and I’m proud to be a lifelong Wildcat. As a University of Arizona student, I played in the marching band and pep band, and I’ve spent my life cheering on the Wildcats.

My path to an engineering career was not linear—it was filled with twists and turns. I began by declaring engineering, then switched to an undergraduate degree in education, teaching high school and community college mathematics. Later, I earned a graduate degree in computer science. This journey ultimately brought me full circle, allowing me to meld the influences of my parents’ careers and my two degrees into becoming a successful technical leader and people manager.

I strive to lead by example, never asking others to do something I wouldn’t do myself. Reflecting on my life and careers, I find immense joy in mentoring and guiding others. Watching students, employees, peers, interns, and friends grow and celebrating their achievements is one of the most fulfilling aspects of my life.

To those who have influenced and supported me along the way, I am profoundly grateful. My parents’ encouragement, my sister’s inspiration, the challenges posed by my math and computer science teachers, and my husband’s unwavering support have all been instrumental in shaping the person I am today.

Jenny Taubert
Micro-Hybrid Electronic – COO
I am a woman of action.

I am someone who prefers to take concrete steps and actively pursue goals rather than just talking or planning about them; I am proactive and readily engage in making things happen. I was shaped by the values that my parents instilled in me, as a fierce empathetic woman. They raised me in an inclusive environment without labels or gender differentiation. I was a tinker and a curious girl. My parents, both engineers, encouraged and supported my curiosity and celebrated my decision to become an engineer. As a woman in engineering and business I listen and understand the needs and perspectives of others. I prioritize teamwork and inclusivity.

I believe in the power of teams and leveraging everyone’s expertise and talents. I’m completely comfortable not being the expert in the room, and I rather seek advice of experts in different fields. My response to conscious or unconscious biases that exist everywhere is to keep my head tall and to use my voice when necessary. I learned to choose my fights and to see challenges as opportunities to grow. There is huge support outside that wants to create a more egalitarian and inclusive society. People that help to eliminate labels while respecting all human beings for what they are, humans.

Jennifer Diaz
Administrative Assistant – Steward Observatory
I am a woman of Integrity; I value fairness and seek to lead by example.

I’ve always been interested in a business career, and when a position opened (science and telescope) at the University of Arizona, I jumped at the opportunity especially that it was in STEM.

I get my work ethic from my parents who worked hard both in the military, which has been a motivation for me and made me who I am today.

The challenge I have had to overcome is to completely hold myself accountable. I have supported my children’s wellbeing and have ensured they receive a good education in the absence of their father.

The most influential person was my little sister, she was the first person to attend college and complete her masters. She has always pushed me to better myself

As a professional, I describe myself as a hard-working and driven individual who isn’t afraid to face a challenge, I have always been committed to continuously learning and improving my skills.

As a leader I believe communication and motivation are key, you can really build a strong relationship when you put these two together.

My biggest accomplishment was being able to implement a new idea and a better system in the world of digital operations, and to see the impact it made.

I see success when I complete the goals, I set for myself as well as making a positive impact on others.

Jessica Stewart
Program Management Lead – Citi
I am a woman of worth.

It took me years to believe in my value. I’ve always been immensely hard on myself – no matter if I did something well, I would hyper focused on what I could have done better. It wasn’t until I became a mother and thought about how I wanted my daughter to value herself that it forced me to change the way I think.

I started to walk the walk. To be a strong, confident woman in this world, I had to shift my perspective. I learned to focus on what I had accomplished rather than what I hadn’t. I reframed my mindset and began to truly appreciate the progress I was making.

This is a journey, continuously re-evaluating and improving, and bringing others on my journey. Helping them not be hard on themselves, I’ve always been the biggest advocate for others. I go out of my way to lend a hand, share knowledge, and be their loudest cheerleader. In many ways, I show up for others in the way I wish I had always shown up for myself.

What I love most about working with people is helping them see their own value—beyond productivity or titles. I see the person, not just their profession, and that’s what truly feeds my soul in this business.

This journey is about continuously moving forward, striving to do better, and bringing others along with me. I aim to help them to be kinder to themselves, and I’ve always been their biggest advocate.

Renee Bidegain
Creative Director – KITSHIP
I am a woman of curiosity, creativity, and vision.

With a deep thirst for knowledge, I am always eager to learn, grow, and understand the world around me. I see infinite possibilities, preferring to view life not as it is, but as it could be. Emotional, passion-driven, and full of ideas, I combine a vivid imagination with a desire for practical solutions. I embrace challenges as opportunities to expand my perspective, forge meaningful connections, and push boundaries.

Charismatic and expressive, I love sharing ideas and creating communities around shared values and ideals. My greatest gift is seeing the spark of potential in everything and everyone—and inspiring others to see it, too. Resilient and adaptable, I balance introspection with action, striving to make a positive impact every day.

Though my strength lies in envisioning what could be, I know that true power comes from turning dreams into reality through consistent, focused effort.

Devon Underwood
Mentor in Residence – University of Arizona Center for Innovation
I am a lifelong learner, endlessly curious about how people collaborate, how teams organize, and how environments can bring out the best in everyone. Success, to me, is about impact—big or small—while shaping a life on my own terms.

My career in Recruiting and Talent Strategy began at a national firm after graduating from the University of Arizona. For 12 years, I specialized in healthcare, building an Executive Search and Permanent Placement division for a national healthcare consulting firm. From there, I guided talent strategies for two companies navigating rapid M&A growth. Now, through my practice, The Talent Store, and my work at UACI, I combine my expertise in recruiting, employer branding, and growth to help organizations build high-performing teams. I’m a business geek at heart, and I thrive on learning about organizations—whether tech startups, growing businesses, or non-profits—and applying creative strategies to help them succeed.

The future of STEM and technology will be shaped by data, AI, FinTech, and sustainable engineering—fields still largely male-dominated. Women face barriers not just to entry but also to having their voices valued. I’m committed to shifting how leadership and expertise are defined, ensuring roles are based on success factors, not historical norms, and vetting talent without bias.

By helping leaders cultivate intentional cultures centered on alignment, connection, feedback, and diverse perspectives, I aim to create workplaces where individuals focus on meaningful work—not fitting in. When we show up authentically, we thrive, contribute, and drive lasting impact.

Jacquie Burrell
Executive Assistant – RTX
I am a woman of empathy and flexibility. Shaped by the mentorship of Marilyn James from the Fullerton Raytheon Site, who guided me early in my career. Her encouragement to embrace my strengths while continuously growing inspired me to approach challenges with resilience and adaptability.

Women often bring a unique, holistic perspective to problem-solving, and I strive to embody that. For me, success is measured by the calm and proactive energy I bring to every situation, allowing others to focus on their work, confident that I have their back.

Observant and intuitive, I possess a unique ability to see beyond words and actions, uncovering the unspoken needs of others. My approach is rooted in working from the inside out—addressing core issues to build meaningful and lasting solutions. This goes beyond observation; I connect deeply with people, understanding their challenges as if walking in their shoes. My emotional intelligence allows me to provide the right support, encouragement, or resources at precisely the right time, bridging gaps and removing roadblocks to foster growth.

I thrive on learning people’s stories, uncovering their motivations, and understanding what drives them. This insight enables me to adapt my approach to each person, fostering trust and synergy that leads to success.

Flexibility and strategy complement my intuition. Once I grasp the background and scope of a challenge, I envision a clear path forward. I meticulously plan, blending foresight with attention to detail, weaving tasks into well-structured schedules while remaining adaptable to change. My ability to balance the big picture with finer details ensures seamless execution and alignment with broader goals.

For me, everything is interconnected. Emotional intelligence fuels my proactive mindset, and together they drive meaningful transformation. I don’t just manage tasks or solve problems—I create harmony, building solutions from the inside out that resonate on personal and professional levels.

My story is one of connection, intuition, and adaptability—a true planner who brings people and projects together with purpose and grace.

Veena Prasad

Director, DS8000 Development – IBM

I am a woman of resilience.

I have faced challenges that tested my strength and determination, but every setback has only fueled my drive to succeed. With a passion for learning, growth, and empowering others, I embrace every opportunity to break barriers and create meaningful change.

My mother was a powerful source of inspiration, instilling in me the belief that education is the backbone of a woman’s independence. Despite not having the opportunity for higher education herself—a challenge compounded by the cultural norms for Indian women of her time—she persisted. With determination, she convinced my father that pursuing higher education was the key to a rewarding future, and her unwavering commitment to this ideal became the foundation of my own journey.

I am deeply committed to supporting women and underrepresented groups, fostering environments where everyone can thrive. Adaptable and ever-evolving, I navigate obstacles with resilience, knowing that perseverance is key to overcoming adversity. My journey is not defined by perfection but by the courage to keep moving forward, no matter the difficulties. I lead with purpose, passion, and a deep sense of responsibility to leave a positive impact on the world. By inspiring others to reach their full potential and embrace their own power, I aim to make a lasting difference for generations to come.
