Vail Academy and High School Welcomes New Principal, Diane Vargo

Vail Academy and High School proudly announced Diane Vargo as its new principal, following the retirement of longtime leader Dennis Barger. Vargo stepped into the role in May 2025 and brings with her 25 years of experience in the Vail School District.

Her journey began in 2000 as a student teacher at Mesquite Elementary School, where she later became principal. Over the years, Vargo has demonstrated a deep commitment to education and community, making her an outstanding choice to lead Vail Academy and High School into its next chapter.

Growing up as a military child, Vargo attended numerous schools across the country. When she began her teaching career, she sought a district that valued community. “Vail’s A+ award-winning status and strong sense of connection made it the perfect place to call home,” she shared.

Six months into her tenure, Vargo has developed a strong grasp of the school’s strengths and what sets Vail Academy and High School apart. Her efforts are now directed toward enhancing those distinctive qualities and elevating the way the school’s story is shared.

“There are many differentiators, so showcasing this to the community is important to me,” she said. Her goal is to highlight the school’s unique blend of rigorous academics, personalized learning and technology integration—all within a close-knit, K-12 environment.

Vail Academy and High School, located at the UA Tech Park, is known for its innovative approach to education. Originally established as a charter high school, it has grown into a comprehensive K-12 campus serving over 600 students. Its small class sizes, collaborative culture and real-world learning opportunities set it apart as a leader in educational innovation.

As Vargo looks ahead, she is committed to continuing the school’s tradition of excellence while strengthening ties with the broader community. In the spirit of Vail’s guiding principle—“Where Education Is a Community Effort”—she aims to ensure that families, businesses and local partners remain integral to student success.
