Carol Stewart Appointed to Brazil–U.S. Fulbright Initiative 

University of Arizona Vice President and Tech Parks Arizona CEO Carol Stewart has been appointed to the Brazil–U.S. Fulbright Initiative at PUCRS. This prestigious five-year international partnership will drive the development of science-based solutions to address climate change mitigation and disaster recovery efforts in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Stewart will contribute her expertise in technology, innovation ecosystems, and business models as part of a global effort to strengthen resiliency through academic collaboration. Her appointment highlights the essential role that science parks and innovation ecosystems play in driving sustainability, fostering international cooperation, and creating lasting impact through shared knowledge and partnerships.

Applied Energetics Battle Lab Success

Applied Energetics, Inc. continues to push boundaries inside its Battle Lab at UA Tech Park. Last week, the team fired its first billion-watt peak-power laser shots across maximum range, successfully disabling a drone camera in under a second. The controlled indoor environment is designed to simulate real-world conditions, accelerating breakthroughs in directed-energy technology. It’s applied science with real-world impact.

Regional Collaboration in Action 

Economic development leaders from across Pima County gathered for the Partners in Progress event, hosted by the Southern Arizona CCIM Chapter, to share insights and strategies for growing a resilient regional economy. The panel highlighted approaches to business attraction, public-private partnerships, and municipal collaboration that contribute to Southern Arizona’s economic strength. Speakers included representatives from Pima County, the City of Tucson, and the towns of Sahuarita, Oro Valley, and Marana—underscoring a collective commitment to shaping the region’s future.

Ariana Deitch, a member of the Tech Parks Arizona marketing and communications team, has been accepted into the Greater Tucson Leadership (GTL) 2026 cohort. GTL is a leadership development program that connects emerging and established leaders dedicated to creating positive change in Southern Arizona through collaboration, innovation, and community engagement. Tech Parks Arizona has been deeply involved with the GTL program for years, actively contributing to its mission by sending participants, championing university-driven economic development, and helping cultivate the next generation of leaders and workforce talent.

Meet Paul Pennington

Facilities Supervisor at Jacobs

Paul leads a team of eight technicians who keep the UA Tech Park buildings running smoothly—handling HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general maintenance across offices, labs and R&D spaces. He’s a Master Electrician with decades of hands-on experience in facilities work. 

Fun fact: When he's not managing building systems, Paul enjoys woodworking in his garage—crafting handmade bowls, pens, goblets, and lamps from scratch!
