Celebrating a Year at Technology’s Best Address 

As the year comes to a close, Tech Parks Arizona reflects on a season defined by progress, collaboration and shared achievement. Throughout 2025, our ecosystem continued to grow through the collective work of our tenants, startups, partners and researchers, contributing to a vibrant environment of discovery and a connected innovation community that embodies Technology’s Best Address. This work is reflected in recently released data showing a $2.6 billion annual economic impact, 15,857 jobs supported and strong third-party perceptions of Tech Parks Arizona as a trusted driver of economic development and business growth. Over the past year, we also advanced new initiatives, expanded partnerships and deepened community engagement, reinforcing the strength of our ecosystem.

As we look ahead to 2026, we do so with momentum and gratitude, for the companies, collaborators and individuals who bring this community to life. Together, we are building a foundation for continued growth, shared success and long-term impact across our region.

People of Impact:

Carol Stewart 

Tucson Lifestyle Magazine’s recent People of Impact issue features Carol Stewart, U of A Vice President, and CEO of Tech Parks Arizona highlighting her longtime leadership in university research park development from her early work establishing a leading research park in Waterloo, Ontario to her role as former CEO of the Association of University Research Parks. The article outlines the results of Tech Parks Arizona’s newly released economic impact analysis, reporting $2.6 billion in annual economic impact, 15,857 jobs supported, $1.1 billion in labor income and $84 million in state tax revenues.

Cyber Summit at UA Tech Park  

The 10th Annual Cyber Southwest Symposium, a regional gathering led by NDIA Southwest, Arizona InfraGard/ACTRA, AFCEA Tucson and the AZ Cyber Initiative, was held at the UA Tech Park Event Center. The program brought together government, defense and industry cybersecurity experts to discuss emerging threats, AI and machine learning applications, risk mitigation strategies and current approaches to cyber defense. Keynotes were delivered by leaders from CW PENSEC and ACTRA, alongside presentations from specialists representing Raytheon, IBM, the FBI and other organizations. Following the symposium,  a hands-on training workshop centered around Ethical Hacking Attack Phases was held, making the two-day event one of Southern Arizona’s most comprehensive cybersecurity learning forums.

Community Service in Action

Peter Loya, Director of Community and Government Relations for Tech Parks Arizona, plays a central role in fostering connection, engagement and a strong sense of community across the UA Tech Park. In addition to his work on campus, Peter serves as President of the Board for Mobile Meals of Southern Arizona, which provides nutritious meals and daily wellness checks to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities. “This role is about more than delivering meals. It’s about dignity, compassion and human connection for people who might otherwise be forgotten,” Loya shared.

UA Tech Park Leaders Recognized by Girl Scouts 

Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona is celebrating 90 years of building courage, confidence and character by recognizing more than 90 women whose leadership strengthens our region. Several leaders within the Tech Parks Arizona community are among this year’s honorees, including Carol Stewart, Cristie Street, Karla Bernal Morales, Jan Lesher, Calline Sanchez and Casey Carrillo. Their contributions reflect the spirit of innovation, service and mentorship that continues to shape Southern Arizona.

Six Months In: A New Chapter of Leadership

Vail Academy and High School welcomed Diane Vargo as the new principal in June, with 25 years of experience in the Vail School District. Vargo brings a strong foundation in community-focused education and a commitment to elevating the school’s distinctive strengths. Vargo’s vision for the school centers on strengthening community partnerships and showcasing the qualities that make Vail Academy and High School leaders in educational innovation. Vargo’s leadership aligns well with the school’s mission to provide a supportive, future-focused learning experience for every student.

UIIN Thought Piece Spotlight 

The University Industry Innovation Network (UIIN) has released a new thought-leadership book highlighting global insights on how universities shape innovation ecosystems. The publication brings together leading voices on building effective, resilient university–industry partnerships. Among them is a contribution from Carol Stewart, Vice President of the University of Arizona and President & CEO of Tech Parks Arizona and the UA Center for Innovation. In her article, “It Takes a Village,” she offers perspectives on creating university-led innovation villages that foster collaboration and economic impact. Her insights support UIIN’s broader effort to define and share best practices for innovation-driven universities. 

The full book is available as a free download for all readers through December 31.

Kris Brandt

Reality Capture Manager at Darling Geomatics

Kris Brandt serves as the Reality Capture Manager at Darling Geomatics, where he oversees the acquisition and processing of highly accurate 3D spatial data. His work leverages advanced surveying technologies, including terrestrial laser scanners, mobile and aerial LiDAR systems, and drone-based photogrammetry, to create precise digital representations of real-world environments. In this role, Kris manages field operations, ensures data quality and accuracy, and coordinates multiple capture methods to deliver comprehensive results for complex projects.

Fun Fact: Outside of work, Kris enjoys building and repairing small electronics, including computers, appliances, and gaming consoles.
