UACI Startup Wins World’s Largest Pitch Competition

Sylvan Source, a University of Arizona Center for Innovation (UACI) startup housed at the UA Tech Park, was chosen as one of the top three companies in the Unicorn World Finals and was the only winner from the U.S. The Unicorn battles attract famous venture capitalists and angel investors seeking to find the best deals for their portfolios. Over the years, $296 million was received in funding by past winners. The Unicorn battles are crucial connections events, bringing together entrepreneurs and investors by showcasing the best and brightest startups across the globe.

Sylvan Source won the competition due to its innovative approach to efficiently treat water. Sylvan Source is devoted to making an impact globally through an industrial-municipal water treatment thermal energy recovery system with superior energy efficiency. This business is working to tackle an issue that has plagued the industry of water treatment for half the cost and with fewer points of failure than traditional methods. 

New Corporate Fitness Center FitZona Opens

The UA Tech Park’s new corporate fitness center, FitZona, is open to fully vaccinated employees. FitZona offers a wide range of cardio and strength-building machines as well as free weights. UA Tech Park is committed to providing workplace wellness and is proud to bring this added amenity to the campus. FitZona has only been open for about a month, and we are already seeing more refreshed faces around campus. Workouts boost positive energy and add to the culture here at UA Tech Park. Be a part of the movement and take advantage of the many benefits to be gained from an on-site corporate fitness center. 

Exploratory Business Visit to Nogales

Nogales leaders gave a warm welcome to business professionals from Tech Parks Arizona, Tucson Hispanic Chamber, and Arizona Tech Council during a business visit earlier in the month with Mayor Garino and the New Supervisor Ruiz. Tucson's new leadership is exploring opportunities to build upon the long-standing relationship to enhance business. 

White Mountain Apache Tribe

We were honored to host the White Mountain Apache Tribe and learn about their initiative to develop the White Mountains Apache Business Innovation & Training Center which would provide training programs and foster new business development for tribal members. The University of Arizona and Pima Community College shared the current business incubation and workforce training programs and discussed collaboration opportunities with the Tribe.

Provost Visits the Park

Dr. Liesl Folks, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at the UArizona stopped by the UA Tech Park for a personal tour. She also had the opportunity to connect with the White Mountain Apache Tribe which was also on-site for a meeting organized by the University of Arizona’s Office of Native American Advancement and Tribal Engagement. These champions exchanged numerous collaboration opportunities based on all the synergy.

Tucson Ranks in Top Tech Markets

Tucson is quickly climbing the rankings for its diverse workforce and geographic benefits. CBRE identified Tucson as No.9 among “Tech Talent Markets” in 2021 due to its strong labor market and growth opportunities for companies. The report analyzes how tech labor trends inform workforce decisions & influence real estate in 50 U.S. & Canadian markets. 

Town of Marana Visits the UA Tech Park

Economic Development & Tourism representatives from the neighboring Town of Marana visited the UA Center for Innovation and received a campus tour of the UA Tech Park. The group learned how this purpose-built environment is customized to support businesses of all sizes and got a first-hand look at this dynamic community where emerging companies and technology giants work side by side.

People of the Park: Milana Marshall

The UA Tech Park is home to the only K-12 school in the Vail School District, one of the top-performing districts in Arizona. When Vail Academy and High School began in 2010, it was one of the nation's first K-12 schools located at a university research park. The collaboration offers students exposure to technology-focused careers through part-time employment, internships, and a variety of other special programs. Milana Marshall, class of 2020 graduate, has benefited from the connection through workforce info sessions, being highlighted as Women of the Tech Park, and currently works for Tech Park Arizona in the communications department.
