UArizona Online, Distance and Continuing Education Moves into The Refinery in the UA Tech Park at The Bridges

The University of Arizona Online, Distance and Continuing Education team completed their move to the UA Tech Park at The Bridges this month. Tech Parks Arizona hosted a welcome celebration to mark the occasion. The Arizona Online team joined the University of Arizona Applied Research Corp, Tech Launch Arizona, UArizona Research, Innovation and Impact at the multi-tenant building known as The Refinery.

The University if Arizona is committed to encouraging access to high-quality courses, certificates and degree programs through delivery methods that serve diverse student populations. Thanks to a growing portfolio of online offering and distance learning centers, more students are able to earn a world-class degree from the University of Arizona. UArizona Online, Distance and Continuing Education centralized their office here at The Refinery to serve that mission and have built out space that includes multiple amenities for online students to effectively receive advisement, instruction, and even have an in-person space to connect with other online students. With dedicated classroom spaces, student lobbies, and sound resistant cubicles, the UArizona Online, Distance and Continuing Education team is well equipped to advance the services they offer to their online student community.

 

UA Tech Park Hosts GTL Economic Development Day

Greater Tucson Leadership (GTL) brought the class of 2023 to the flagship location of the UA Tech Park to hold their annual economic development day. The group spent the day engaging with economic development speakers who shared on a variety of topics. They also toured the park to see the university-based economic development fist-hand visiting with startup companies housed at the UA Center for Innovation and meeting the newest tenant, Eurofins Cell TX, a global company who is building an FDA registered laboratory for screening human cells, tissues, and cellular- and tissue-based products.

 
 

Biotech Thrives in Tucson

Inside Tucson Business ran a feature article titled Biotech is thriving in the Tucson return-to-office phase. The article showcases how opportunities to collaborate with other research business leaders and entrepreneurs are a big part of what's made the city a hub of bioscience activity. At the UA Tech Park there is an incredible number of opportunities for businesses to collaborate with the University of Arizona. The UA Tech Parks are are strategic locations that foster business creation and growth for business of all sizes, from startups to tech giants.

 
 
 

TENWEST & IdeaFunding Winners

TENWEST Impact Festival which was co-led by Startup Tucson and the UA Center for Innovation took place the first week of November. The five-day conference contained immersive exhibitions, talks, and interactive experiences, national experts and local heroes that inspired ideas and facilitated connections that empowered participants to act. The year 2022 marked the 25th Anniversary of IdeaFunding which is Southern Arizona's largest pitch competition. IdeaFunding spotlighted 25 startups throughout the day and awarded more than $55,000 in prizes including the $25,000 grand prize.

 
 

Governor's Celebration of Innovation

The 2022 Governor's Celebration of Innovation, hosted by Arizona Tech Council and presented by the Arizona Commerce Authority, proved that Tucson and Arizona are the place for Innovation. Four Tucson-based companies brought home Awards of Excellence including UA Center for Innovation company Sylvan Source as Innovator of the Year - Small Company, and UA Tech Park Tenant IBM as Innovator of the Year - Large Company. Other Tucson winners include Marcus Engineering LLC as the Ed Denison Business Leader of the Year and Paragon Space Development as the Transformational Leader of the Year. Congratulations to all, cheers to another successful year of innovation!

 

Tucson Police Dept. Certificate of Appreciation

The UA Tech Park at The Bridges was recently recognized as a community partner by the Tucson Police Department (TPD) with an official Certificate of Appreciation. We would like to extend our gratitude for the acknowledgment, we are proud to support the TPD in their outreach efforts.

 

IBM Tucson Innovates Tape Storage

After 40+ years, IBM's storage development labs at the flagship UA Tech Park are still going strong. The team consists of about 1,000 workers that generate more than 400 patents annually. The Arizona Daily Star recently published an article highlighting IBM Tucson's journey with innovation in tape storage.

 

People of the Park:

Chris Cobo

Meet Chris Cobo, Lead Maintenance Technician/High Voltage Electrician on the Jacobs team. He has been working here at the flagship UA Tech Park for six years. Day to day, Chris supports the park with repairs and maintenance related to the site infrastructure and supporting systems, including high voltage electrical work. In his time here, Chris has brought in tips, tricks and tech from the mining industry to make working with the high voltage safer for the whole team. Thanks for everything you do for the park, Chris!
